SABCS keynote speaker to explore ‘superconvergence’ of AI, genetics, and biotechnology

Artificial intelligence, genetics, and biotechnology are converging in ways that could change how medicine is practiced. At the 2026 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, technology and healthcare futurist Jamie Metzl will address what this convergence means for medical research, patient care and the future of healthcare.

Metzl is a strategist and advisor for numerous organizations with an interest in geopolitics, health, and technology, and he is the author of books including “Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity” and “The AI Ten Commandments, A New Moral Code for Humanity.”He has served roles with the United States National Security Council, the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the U.S. State Department, the World Health Organization Expert Advisory Committee on Developing Global Standards for Governance and Oversight of Human Genome Editing, and the Lancet Commission on Precision Medicine.

Metzl’s keynote address, Superconvergence: AI, Genetics, Biotechnology and the Future of Healthcare, will draw on lessons from his 2024 book, “Superconvergence: How the Genetics, Biotech, and AI Revolutions Will Transform Our Lives, Work, and World.”

While technologies such as AI are already reshaping cancer diagnosis and treatment, Metzl believes the future of medicine will still depend on human healthcare professionals who can interpret the vast data now available, quickly integrate increasingly powerful technologies, and, perhaps most importantly, provide human judgment and oversight that machines aren’t capable of.

The keynote address will take place on Wednesday, December 9, at 9 a.m. in Hall 1 of the convention center. SABCS Co-director Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, FAACR, director of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate dean of oncology programs at UT Southwestern Medical Center, will introduce Metzl following opening remarks and before the start of General Session 1.
